Rutherford Introduces Legislation to Support Secret Service Leadership

January 11, 2024

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman John Rutherford (FL-05) introduced H.R. 6955, the Investing in Uniformed Division Leadership Act, with Bennie G. Thompson, Ranking Member of the House Committee on Homeland Security. This bill would make the Chief and Assistant Chief positions of the United States Secret Service Uniformed Division part of the Senior Executive Service. This will align the pay and benefits of these positions with the responsibilities and strategic nature of the roles.

“As a former sheriff, I know firsthand how critical it is to recruit and retain the best officers,” said Congressman Rutherford. “This bill invests in executive training and leadership within the U.S. Secret Service Uniformed Division which will help the Secret Service maintain their leadership talent. I am proud to partner with Ranking Member Thompson in this effort to ensure the men and women defending our nation’s leaders are best equipped to do their job.”

“The Secret Service Uniformed Division Chief and Assistant Chief are experienced leaders in charge of a law enforcement staff of over 1,700 officers,” said Bennie G. Thompson. “They are critical to our homeland security and their positions clearly belong in the Senior Executive Service. I thank Congressman Rutherford for introducing this bipartisan bill and look forward to it being taken up by the House soon.”
