WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Representatives John Rutherford (FL-04), Derek Kilmer (WA-06), and Jaime Herrera Beutler (WA-03) introduced H.R. 6207, the Coronavirus Worker Relief Act. This new bipartisan, bicameral legislation would provide disaster unemployment assistance to people who are unable to work due to the current coronavirus outbreak following an emergency declaration by the president.

This week on Capitol Hill, two members of the Florida delegation with backgrounds in law enforcement unveiled a proposal to help "better train law enforcement for interactions with individuals suffering from traumatic brain injury (TBI) or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)."

WASHINGTON, D.C. Today, Congressman John Rutherford (FL-04) cosponsored the Creating Hope Reauthorization Act. This legislation expedites FDA approval of new medications for children suffering from diseases, like cancer, by expanding the priority review voucher program. By allowing the FDA to review these emerging medicines at a faster rate, lifesaving treatments can be made more readily available to sick children across America.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Representatives John Rutherford (R-FL), David Trone (D-MD), Madeleine Dean (D-PA), Guy Reschenthaler (R-PA), Mary Gay Scanlon (D-PA), and Kelly Armstrong (R-ND), along with Senators John Cornyn (R-TX) and Richard Blumenthal (D-NY), introduced H.R. 5909, the Crisis Stabilization and Community Reentry Actof 2020. This bipartisan legislation helps local law enforcement partner with community-based mental health providers to ensure incarcerated individuals transition successfully back into society.

I recently spent the morning with Amelia Toffee, a small (and delicious!) business on Amelia Island, and joined their talented employees hard at work. During my visit, I also had the opportunity to make a fresh batch of toffee using locally produced spirits from Marlin and Barrel distillery!

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Representatives John Rutherford (R-FL), Charlie Crist (D-FL), and Val B. Demings (D-FL) introduced the Foreign National Firearms Background Check Enhancement Act. On December 6, 2019, three servicemembers were killed and eight were injured in a shooting at Naval Air Station Pensacola. The shooter, who was a Saudi Arabian national, used a hunting license to legally purchase a handgun. Today's legislation would prohibit foreign nationals from purchasing a firearm in the United States, unless that individual receives a waiver from the U.S.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Representatives John Rutherford (FL-04), Mario Diaz-Balart (FL-25), Ted Deutch (FL-22), and Stephanie Murphy (FL-07) introduced the bipartisan and bicameral Luke and Alex School Safety Act of 2019. This bill, named after Luke Hoyer and Alex Schachter who were killed at the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting, would help local school districts access federal school safety resources by creating a federal clearinghouse of best practices and federal assistance.

For another Rutherford Ride Along, I spent the day delivering packages with UPS in Jacksonville! It was an excellent opportunity to learn about the logistical and physical challenges that drivers and warehouse employees must overcome every day to get your package to the front door. These hard-working men and women are an excellent example of what propels our economy forward.
